Laptops are not good swimmers

As a Druva employee of course I understand backup, sync and access, and data protection to name a few. But it reminds me of the days prior to joining Druva when I never cared about my laptop backup or the importance of having it. We all take it for granted don’t we? As long as it’s non-intrusive and fully functional in the background while providing continuous data protection that’s all I ask. I refer to my inSync agent icon as my insurance policy. It’s the seal of “guaranteed” data protection.

But my days of not caring about backup recently changed. I headed off to SNW Europe in Frankfurt with my MacBook in tow – and like most of us it’s my lifeline. On the morning I was leaving Frankfurt to return to San Francisco I met our sales team for breakfast at the hotel. As we’re talking, I accidentally knocked over a glass of water. My colleagues said there was a look of horror on my face as the water moved in slow motion across my keyboard and seeped under every key. I quickly hit “send” on my draft email and proceeded to soak up as much water as I could with my napkin. I powered down just like always and took off for the airport.

14 hours later I arrived home and so did my reality. A crashed laptop, therefore no data. My laptop was replaced the day I arrived home and thanks to Druva’s inSync I was able to restore all my lost data instantly with secure browser-based access. I’m all about simplicity and ease-of-use. I was back up and working in no time thanks to inSync’s advanced WAN optimization. This made my boss very happy.

Lost critical data is way too common in remote workforces. Here at Druva, we hear stories every day. Someones laptop is lost, stolen or like me, ruined by a glass of spilled water. And yet data shows that only 39% of enterprise laptops are protected. It’s like driving without insurance or getting cancer and having no healthcare. Who would do that? Go figure.

Motif #4.1

Every well-planned release has a motif, a term often used to describe a dominant theme in a literary, artistic, or musical work.

In all the early releases, the motif for Druva has been Simplicity: simplicity for both end-users and for IT administrators. For end users, Druva inSync is now so simple to use that it just works without their knowing. It’s completely non-intrusive and works on all kinds of networks such as WAN and VPN. It’s so simple to use that end users can access their data from any Web browser without having to contact IT. Likewise, for IT administrators, it’s so simple to download (~40MB), install (under 20 minutes), and manage (almost zero maintenance) that the total cost of ownership is almost negligible. The simplicity motif has been a strong differentiator for Druva’s offerings.

For inSync 4.0, we made Storage and Bandwidth Optimization the motif. To optimize storage, we introduced App-aware Dedupe, an industry-first dedupe technology that offers a 90% storage savings across all user data and a 100% dedupe accuracy at the source (laptops) for supported applications such as Outlook and Office. To optimize bandwidth, we introduced the Octopus WAN optimization engine, a multi-threaded client architecture that does smart bandwidth throttling to offer a 5x performance gain for every client backing up on WAN.

The eye-catching red shack on the wharf (Rockport, Massachusetts) is often called Motif #1, a reference to its popularity among artists.

The theme for inSync 4.1 emerged naturally to “Scale” as customers were increasingly deploying Druva to more users in each of their environments. With release 4.1, we wanted to make inSync scale efficiently along several dimensions as outlined below –

Scale -

  • 2000 users per server
  • 16TB of data per server
  • 200 parallel connections per server

Performance -

  • We’re excited to introduce an innovative HyperCache technology, which can improve backup performance by 6x compared to inSync 4.0. HyperCache is an in-memory cache that can be configured to access the most optimal subset of your dedupe index in memory resulting in a high hit rate. The usual 80-20 rule applies here: with just a 30% subset of the dedupe index, Hypercache can deliver upwards of 75% hit rate. We recommend a 4GB of HyperCache size for every 1TB of data to maximize performance. The admin console offers a simple way for you to configure HyperCache for optimal performance.
  • You can now configure an SSD storage for your dedupe index to further enhance your server performance. Lab results show a whopping 12x performance improvement with HyperCache and SSD configurations.
  • You can now install Druva on a 64-bit system for enhanced performance.

Administration

  • 4.1 now supports a new administrative role in addition to a Server Administrator. A Profile Administrator role grants permissions to manage one or more user profiles in order to edit profile settings, add users, and manage data restore for those profiles. This is a great way to scale the administration tasks across your organization between server and profile administration.
  • In light of the above role, we’ve enhanced our dashboard and reporting, so an administrator can get a customized view of their reports depending on their role.
  • You can now automate the import of users to inSync from your Active Directory. A periodic import from your AD can be set up to dynamically add users to inSync.

Access -

We’re excited about the upcoming deployments of inSync 4.1 and the performance benefits to all of you. In my next blog, I’ll talk about the 2 editions of inSync 4.1 (Enterprise and Professional), how they compare, and which one is right for you. Stay tuned….

Lost Laptops: A Billion Dollar Problem

Lost Laptops: Billion Dollar Risk

This weekend I came across an incredible report – “The Billion Dollar Lost Laptop Problem” (PDF), published by Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Intel. The report highlighted the (true) fact that enterprises are losing billions of dollars from lost laptops.

The report surveyed 329 enterprises to find that they had lost 86,455 laptops in past one year.  Using another report “Cost of a Lost Laptop” (PDF), they quantified the total loss for the surveyed enterprise to be $2.2  Billion.

Here is the quick math from both these reports –

  1. On an avg. 9.44% of corporate laptops are lost/damaged every year
  2. Education and health care face the highest risk of about 10.5%
  3. 76% of these laptops are lost off-site or during transit
  4. 46% of laptops contain confidential data
  5. Combining the loss of business, confidential data, time and hardware the avg. cost of lost laptop is $25,000
  6. Backup and encryption can significantly reduce the cost (by approx. 40%)

I would be on my way to India this Tuesday evening. Will make sure my data is backed up and I don’t take it out at Starbucks :)

InSync v4 (Blackbird) Beta – Registration Open

insync-4-beta

After a month long limited “technology preview”, Druva inSync v4 beta will now be available to all partners, customers and new registrations starting July 15th.

InSync v4.0 codenamed after the Lockheed reconnaissance aircraft -SR71 Blackbird, will showcase 4 super stunning features -

  1. App-Aware Dedupe
  2. New Blackbird Storage Engine
  3. New Redesigned Octopus WAN Optimization Engine
  4. Web 2.0 Management Console & Interactive Dashboard

First of its kind, the app-aware dedupe engine understands the data structure for applications (like Outlook & MS Office), and deduplicates data at message or logical block level. This guarantees 100% dedupe accuracy, and a significant improvement in bandwidth/storage utilization.

The new (Blackbird) storage engine now utilizes a much advanced embedded database from Oracle instead of SQL database. Less than 1MB in size, the new database simplifies installation and adds raw rocket power to the dedupe engine. The new storage architecture will support 16TB of dedupe storage with 200+ parallel connections.

The new redesigned Octopus WAN Optimization engine is designed to optimally utilize both high speed networks and weakest of WAN links. The new auto-resume feature ensures that a large file is resumed after a network interruption.

A big fan of usability, the new web console is my favourite. It’s stunningly attractive and I personally love the dashboard. The new dashboard shows some interesting statistics like data composition of backup, user activity graphs, storage growth so on.

Oops, I Lost My Laptop !

According to the recent study by Ponemon Institute, “Airport Insecurity: The Case of Lost Laptops”, sponsored by Dell, business travellers lose more than 12,000 laptops per week in U.S. airports.

Mobile Workforce Airports

According to the same study, which examined losses at 106 of the U.S.’s largest airports, the top 36 “Class B” airports averaged 286 lost laptops per month, which is about one laptop lost every 2.6 hours at these airports. The study also found that only 66% of the lost laptops were never recovered and about a third of those recovered were reclaimed.

Enterprise data is more dispersed and diverse than ever. And with over 30% corporate data sitting on PCs, administrators can no longer hold the end user responsible for protection of this critical corporate data.

The the above statistics clearly states the need for the following two solution on every single corporate PC  -

  • Data Protection Solution – Designed for laptops, keeping in mind the mobile workforce
  • Disk Encryption and Data Leakage Prevention Solution

Casestudy: 5 Key Financial Institutions, India

PC Data growth and concerns surrounding its backup are not new, but some of the new age factors like mobility and ever growing emails have brought an interesting twist to the story. The pace of growth of data is now much more rapid, its location more dispersed and the linkage between data sets more complex. And this is especially true with large financial institutions, which have several “branch offices” and a large pool of mobile workforce.

When we approached major financial institutions in India, we were surprised to find that most of them did not have an end-user backup policy in place especially for the mobile workforce. Interestingly they had tried the available solutions, but were not convinced with the proposition.

After further dialogues, we could summarize unsolved concerns  as follows -

  1. The backup solution should not impact the user
  2. Centralized backup for multiple branch offices and mobile workforce
  3. Efficient bandwidth throttling and management
  4. Low impact on storage

We showcased and proposed inSync solution and proud to say that a large percentage of initial test deployments have already placed an order. Here are some of the brands we are proud to associate with -

Top Indian BFSI Customers

So, what makes inSync a favourite with this big brand names ?

Firstly, I think because its Simple.

Although none of the customers explicitly mentioned it, but I think “simplicity” is one of the most underrated characteristics of any product and specially when it comes to backup.

I must confess, not so long back, I personally tried to installed a product which starts with a “T” and ends with “li”. The battle ended after 2 days and I still not sure if I won it :) I strongly feel, that in this new “twitter” age, complexity is that last thing the world wants.

Simple “under 30 minutes” installation and clear-n-crisp pricing are the two features which have fuelled the exponential growth of this product. Most of these accounts didn’t have to spend more than a day to fully understand all the features and deploy within the first set of test users. In fact for one of the accounts, it was just 2 hours :)

Secondly, because it comes with some Unmatched Features.

InSync comes with some very disruptive features like -Druvaa inSync Laptop Backup for Enterprises

  1. Global source based data deduplication
  2. Continuous data protection
  3. Dynamic bandwidth and CPU scheduling
  4. WAN optimization
  5. Search based point-in-time recovery
  6. Managed end-point (client) upgrades
  7. Bare metal restore

And to best of my knowledge, most of these features are not offered by the existing products.

Third, because its Focused

Most of the existing products were developed to take care of traditional tape backups and now have been made to evolve to “backup servers, PCs and Laptops to disk/ tapes over LAN. And maybe sometimes help you to make some coffee” :)

We designed inSync from scratch,  just focussed on “laptops”.

For example, a server backup has strict calendar based schedule which doesn’t make much sense for laptops. The server backup solutions are designed for secure and reliable local networks, but the laptop backup solution must be friendly towards the insecure weak WAN links.

Almost all the administrators regularly use 95% of it’s features. And all the new additions are planned keeping in mind the laptop users.

Lastly, The Product Quality

Most of these accounts paid a premium for inSync compared to existing “established” products. But, I guess quality is surely remembered much after the cost is forgotten.

Six things customers love about inSync & three things they don’t

As I mentioned in the last post, Druvaa acquired some great customers across 12 different countries. A large majority of the new customers are large enterprises from Technology and Finance verticals. The smallest deal size was about 20 licenses and largest about 10,000 licenses.

As a company policy we don’t engage in traditional enterprise selling, instead just help the interested customers buy mainly through the website. With this model, its even more important for to know what the customer likes and dislikes about the product.

Customer Survey

I tried to reach almost all major customers to see why they purchased inSync and some others on why they did not. In this post I have tried to summarize the response I received.

Six things the customers really love about the product -

  1. Usability and ease of use – Especially the quick 20 minutes setup time for inSync v3 was very much appreciated
  2. Data deduplication and time savings - On an average the customers are seeing 1:15 storage and bandwidth savings compared to traditional softwares.
  3. WAN performance – Most of the customers are backing up mobile workforce easily and enjoying this feature.
  4. Search based restore – Search is used by almost 100% of the users and absolutely loved by all. This is  something truly unique with inSync.
  5. Granular user policy control – Control over bandwidth, folders and restore policies is appreciated by all.
  6. Invisible backups – Smaller, smarter backup and specially the flexible scheduling is liked by all.

One of the fast emerging hot favorite feature is Bare Metal Restore, but I believe it may take some more time for this feature to get adopted properly.

Three things the customers or prospects would like to see improve -

  1. Mac Client - We do have Linux and Windows client, and all I can say is that Mac client is on its way :)
  2. Price - In the current economic scenario, unfortunately pricing is a major issue. This is probably a reason we saw sharp rise in sales when we offered the online introductory discount on v3. We do plan to release a low cost offering for inSync in near future
  3. Performance for large backup/restore- With the new release there are a few performance issues for non-compressible data especially over the Gigabit network. This is expected to be taken care of with next release.

With the new v3 release now production ready, in the next few posts I would like to outline the product roadmap and whats happening with the new product – Druvaa Pheonix.
